Job Description

Senior Applications Engineer

Location: Remote within the U.S
Base Salary: $150,000–$170,000 + bonus potential and comprehensive benefits

Edison Smart is representing an innovative organization that is expanding its smart building and building automation capabilities and is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Applications Engineer to support the continued growth of its technical offering.

This is an opportunity for a technically strong building automation professional to work at an enterprise level, helping clients move away from fragmented, proprietary control environments and toward more open, secure, scalable, and centralized building automation architectures.

The role will involve working across complex smart building environments, supporting the design and management of enterprise-wide control strategies, Niagara platforms, building automation networks, analytics, and third-party integrations.

Rather than being tied to a single construction project, you will have the opportunity to work across multiple clients and environments, providing strategic technical input while also delivering practical solutions that improve the way buildings are controlled, monitored, and managed.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will combine strong hands-on Niagara expertise with a solid understanding of BAS networking, IT infrastructure, systems architecture, and enterprise-level building automation.

You will work closely with clients, internal technical teams, IT professionals, and third-party systems integrators to develop, implement, and maintain scalable smart building solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Smart Building Strategy

  • Support the development of technical strategies for building automation and smart building systems.
  • Contribute to retrofit, new construction, system conversion, optimization, and enterprise integration projects.
  • Advise clients on scalable, open, secure, and future-ready BAS architectures.
  • Help develop solutions that integrate multiple building systems and technologies into a centralized enterprise environment.

Niagara Engineering & Enterprise Systems

  • Design, configure, program, and optimize Niagara 4 systems.
  • Develop scalable Niagara architectures, graphics, supervisors, and enterprise-level solutions.
  • Support the deployment and management of Niagara networks across multiple buildings and client environments.
  • Manage Niagara licensing, system versioning, compatibility, upgrades, and expansion.
  • Monitor system resources and support the troubleshooting of complex platform and network issues.
  • Integrate a wide range of third-party devices and systems using both proprietary and open protocols.
  • Develop advanced wire sheet programming and support custom Niagara-based solutions.
  • Manage Niagara databases, stations, services, schedules, histories, alarms, point data, and graphics.
  • Support efficient data and configuration transfers between Niagara stations and systems.

BAS Networking & IT Infrastructure

  • Work closely with IT teams and other technical stakeholders to develop reliable and secure communication pathways.
  • Support network architecture and subnetting requirements for BAS environments.
  • Troubleshoot complex communication and networking issues across BAS infrastructure.
  • Work with and understand common IT infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, media converters, and related technologies.
  • Support the management of BAS data across different layers of network architecture.
  • Diagnose BACnet communication issues and identify the root causes of system failures.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of BACnet/IP and BACnet MS/TP communication.

Client & Vendor Management

  • Engage directly with clients to understand technical requirements and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Support enterprise-wide management of open Niagara automation environments.
  • Coordinate and oversee third-party systems integration vendors.
  • Provide technical guidance to internal teams, clients, and external partners.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of best practices for large-scale BAS deployments.

Required Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5–10 years of direct experience working with building automation systems.
  • Experience installing, configuring, programming, calibrating, validating, and networking BAS devices.
  • Experience with HVAC controls, lighting controls, and energy metering systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Tridium Niagara 4.
  • Niagara 4 certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience integrating proprietary and non-proprietary third-party systems and devices.
  • Strong Niagara wire sheet programming skills.
  • Experience with JSON development and data structures.
  • Advanced knowledge of Niagara databases, platforms, services, stations, graphics, and enterprise management.
  • Experience managing Niagara licensing, versions, compatibility, vulnerability patching, and system expansion.
  • Strong knowledge of BAS networking and IT infrastructure.
  • Experience working with routers, switches, firewalls, media converters, and network architecture.
  • The ability to troubleshoot complex BAS communication issues and determine root cause.
  • Strong understanding of BACnet/IP and BACnet MS/TP.
  • Experience working with IT teams and explaining technical network requirements to non-BAS stakeholders.

Preferred Experience

The following experience would be highly advantageous:

  • Designing complete building automation hardware and software solutions.
  • Developing controller and sensor layouts.
  • Designing BAS network architectures.
  • Developing detailed sequences of operation.
  • Writing BAS scopes of work and technical specifications.
  • Developing custom code within the Niagara development framework.
  • Integrating legacy proprietary control systems into Niagara.
  • Experience with large-scale or multi-site Niagara deployments.
  • Experience supporting enterprise-level smart building environments.

What Success Looks Like

This position would suit a technically curious and ambitious professional who enjoys solving complex problems and working across multiple technology layers.

The successful candidate will be:

  • Technically driven with a strong foundation in BAS and Niagara.
  • A systems thinker who understands how controls, networks, IT infrastructure, and building systems interact.
  • A problem solver who can investigate issues and identify root causes rather than simply resolve symptoms.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable taking ownership of complex technical challenges.
  • Curious and adaptable with an interest in emerging smart building technologies.
  • A strong communicator who can work effectively with clients, IT teams, integrators, and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborative and positive with the ability to contribute to a high-performing technical environment.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $150,000–$170,000 base salary
  • Bonus potential
  • Medical and dental insurance
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, and company holidays
  • Retirement plan with employer matching and annual company contributions
  • Life insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage
  • Commuter benefits
  • Fitness reimbursement
  • Healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Backup childcare and family support programs
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Work-life assistance benefits
  • Additional holiday contribution programs

The final compensation package will be determined based on factors including location, qualifications, education, technical expertise, professional experience, and market conditions.

If you are an experienced Senior Applications Engineer, Niagara 4 Engineer, BAS Engineer, or Smart Building Engineer looking to work on enterprise-scale automation environments and help shape the future of open, secure, and connected buildings, this could be an excellent opportunity to take your career to the next level.
