Senior PLC Controls Engineer - Contract

Edison Smart are working with a major Intralogistics and material handling company to hire a Senior Controls Engineer to support the design, development, and commissioning of automated warehouse and sortation systems.

Role Overview

You’ll lead and support the delivery of controls systems across the full project lifecycle, from design through to commissioning, while mentoring junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop PLC code (Rockwell required) and support on-site commissioning
  • Design and implement HMI/SCADA systems (FactoryTalk, Ignition, Wonderware)
  • Troubleshoot I/O, PLC, VFDs, and industrial networks
  • Review electrical designs and produce as-built documentation
  • Support system testing, commissioning, and client handover
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and vendors
  • Provide technical leadership to junior engineers

Requirements

  • 4–7 years in industrial controls/automation
  • Strong experience with:
    • PLCs (Rockwell essential; Siemens a plus)
    • HMI/SCADA platforms
    • Industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus)
  • Experience with commissioning and troubleshooting automated systems
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience)

Desirable

  • Material handling / intralogistics experience
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, UL standards
  • Motor control panel design (400/480VAC)

Travel

  • 40–50% to customer sites
