Warehouse Automation Engineer – Freelance Contractor
Overview
We are supporting a large engineering organisation delivering advanced warehouse automation projects across France. They are seeking a Warehouse Automation Engineer to assist with PLC development, conveyor system integration, and on-site commissioning activities for automated material-handling systems.
This role involves Siemens TIA Portal programming, commissioning automated warehouse equipment, and supporting the deployment of high-performance industrial automation solutions.
Key Responsibilities

Develop and modify PLC programs using Siemens TIA Portal (S7-1200/S7-1500) for warehouse automation systems.

Configure hardware, PROFINET networks, distributed I/O, and safety functions.

Integrate conveyors, shuttles, sensors, drives, and field devices into complete warehouse automation workflows.

Perform on-site commissioning tasks including I/O checks, drive setup, motion testing, and safety validation.

Troubleshoot PLC logic, network communication, and electrical/mechanical issues during system bring-up.

Conduct system-level testing such as material-flow simulations and go-live preparation.

Provide clear documentation, test results, and commissioning reports.

Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to ensure smooth project delivery.
Required Skills & Experience

Strong proficiency with Siemens TIA Portal (LAD, FBD, or ST).

Hands-on commissioning experience in industrial automation, ideally material-handling or warehouse systems.

Solid understanding of PROFINET networks, distributed I/O, and safety systems.

Experience working with conveyors, automated equipment, or electro-mechanical systems.

Ability to diagnose and resolve PLC, electrical, and automation-related issues independently.

Willingness to travel to customer sites across France as part of project delivery.
Nice to Have

Experience with automated storage systems (AS/RS, stacker cranes, shuttle systems).

Familiarity with industrial drives (e.g., Siemens G120) and motion control.

Exposure to WMS/WCS integration concepts.

French communication ability for on-site coordination.
