Job Description

Warehouse Automation Engineer – Freelance Contractor

Overview

We are supporting a large engineering organisation delivering advanced warehouse automation projects across France. They are seeking a Warehouse Automation Engineer to assist with PLC development, conveyor system integration, and on-site commissioning activities for automated material-handling systems.

This role involves Siemens TIA Portal programming, commissioning automated warehouse equipment, and supporting the deployment of high-performance industrial automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and modify PLC programs using Siemens TIA Portal (S7-1200/S7-1500) for warehouse automation systems.

  • Configure hardware, PROFINET networks, distributed I/O, and safety functions.

  • Integrate conveyors, shuttles, sensors, drives, and field devices into complete warehouse automation workflows.

  • Perform on-site commissioning tasks including I/O checks, drive setup, motion testing, and safety validation.

  • Troubleshoot PLC logic, network communication, and electrical/mechanical issues during system bring-up.

  • Conduct system-level testing such as material-flow simulations and go-live preparation.

  • Provide clear documentation, test results, and commissioning reports.

  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to ensure smooth project delivery.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong proficiency with Siemens TIA Portal (LAD, FBD, or ST).

  • Hands-on commissioning experience in industrial automation, ideally material-handling or warehouse systems.

  • Solid understanding of PROFINET networks, distributed I/O, and safety systems.

  • Experience working with conveyors, automated equipment, or electro-mechanical systems.

  • Ability to diagnose and resolve PLC, electrical, and automation-related issues independently.

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites across France as part of project delivery.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with automated storage systems (AS/RS, stacker cranes, shuttle systems).

  • Familiarity with industrial drives (e.g., Siemens G120) and motion control.

  • Exposure to WMS/WCS integration concepts.

  • French communication ability for on-site coordination.
